Social Engagement

It appears I have a date.

date (n.): the oblong edible fruit of a palm.

No, not that one.

date (n.): an appointment for a specified time, esp. a social engagement with the opposite sex.

Thaaaaaaaaat's the one.

Her name is Paula and she's a schoolteacher, former copy editor and Staten Island resident. Likes: Baseball, doo-wop, and dogs in the toy group. We had a fairly brief but encouraging phone conversation tonight and I suggested we attend the screening of Phantom of the Opera in Prospect Park (1925 version with live musical accompaniment by the Alloy Orchestra) this Friday evening. Dinner first.

This was all set up by the ex, who wants to see me happy. (Bless her generous heart, because I can't stand the guy she's dating now.)

Apparently, I'm going to be the tall one this time. Paula's five foot even.

I'll provide a post-date wrap-up. Let's see how this goes.

so looking forward to the post-date wrap-up! We're going to want details you know, what you ordered, what she ordered, what you talked about, hmmm... you might want to take notes.

you might want to take notes.

Tempting, but it might make dinner awkward:

PAULA: Anyway, it's not like I don't want a relationship, but it's just hard to find....

[CJL flips open notebook, and clicks his ballpoint pen.]

PAULA: What are you doing?
CJL: Taking notes. My LJ group wants the details.
PAULA: Of our date?
CJL: They're a curious group. Could you repeat the part about your painful adolescence? I didn't get the part about the hazing in high school. [Beat] Hey, where're you going?

Lol.

I was very frustrated last night because I couldn't take notes during "Batman Begins." Lj reaches into every aspect of life!

Have a great time.

Since you're all out there, what you do think?

Do I bring flowers? Flower, singular? Doggie toy for her pooches? CD to show her I acknowledge her musical tastes?

I say flowers. You can never go wrong with flowers. I've never been a huge fan of the single flower, and the first date is too soon for a gift. A pretty but small bouquet is a very nice touch.

Any other questions? I've got lots of advice. Lots and lots and lots.

Thanks, Sara, that'll be fine. I don't want to pre-analyze every aspect of a first date, because it'll just make me twitchy. And nobody wants that.

Hey, that's great! Hope you have a wonderful time.
We expect a full report. Otherwise those of us who have no social life to speak of will be very disappointed. I live vicariously through LJ.
